Styling Sentience

"Don’t be into trends. Don’t make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way you live."
— Gianni Versace

That news I was talking about in my previous posts? Well, I've enrolled into a fashion school, Fashion Institute of the Philippines. Their Fashion Styling course is my parents' birthday gift to me and I couldn't be more thankful. Just in case you're wondering, my birthday is actually today. Happy 21st to me! :)

When one hears the words "fashion stylist", I think a mental image of The Rachel Zoe Project almost always comes to mind. Fashion shows, celebrities and tons of designer goods - it's like you died and went to fashion heaven! But trust me when I say that styling is not always glamorous.

I've had the privilege to work as an associate fashion stylist for Fashbook, a TV show starring Solenn Heussaff, for a few months now. It's an opportunity that I have only fantasized of having and was clueless on where to start. I'm grateful of how Melai has introduced me to the world of styling and I wanna show everyone who reads my blog as well.

Clothes are only one part of the equation but, of course, weighs the heaviest. Before the clothes actually make it on a celebrity/model, there are still a lot of steps to go through like contacting brands/designers and pulling out the clothes from their respective stores/showrooms. It sounds deceivingly easy but it can get tricky when unanswered e-mails and traffic along with other factors get involved in the equation.

Working on Fashbook has given me a good sense of what celebrity styling is about. It can get a bit stressful but it has its perks like visiting great locations like the one in this post: Moroso Showroom at Ortigas. They house some unique and quirky furniture pieces.

Print Overload: I can count four different prints on this photo.

People often want to pursue fashion styling because they love clothes and they love designer stuff. But it's not just about dressing up, it involves research and keeping up with the latest in fashion. One thing I learned from my first day in FIP is that you have to be well-versed and knowledgeable of the fashion industry especially when working with clients.

After a few months of styling, I think it's safe to say that I've grown as person. And I'm not just saying that because I've just turned a year older. I found myself being able to interact more (which I suck at) and wanting to pursue and push harder when I was at my lowest point.

The photos in this post are from Fashbook's last shooting day of 2012. The people behind the show are really easy to interact and get along with plus working with Solenn has been such a pleasure, she's so down-to-earth. Assisting Melai has been a good learning experience for me. This week, I'm actually heading the styling since Melai won't be around and I really hope I do a good job. *crosses fingers*
